Frequently Asked Questions
Here are the answers to the questions we’re most often asked about VueNZ. If your question isn’t answered here, just send us an email and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
What do we get with our VueNZ licence?
It’s up to you! VueNZ can be customised to your requirements, which means you can:
- choose to access the whole of New Zealand or a defined section
- arrange to store your own geo-referenced imagery in the VueNZ system, where it can be integrated with other available imagery
- authorise other VueNZ customers to access your imagery under licence.
Using the power of the internet, the images will be served directly to your in-house applications.

Once we have a clear idea of how you plan to use VueNZ, we’ll check whether you can access images that are only available under licence with other parties (such as KiwImage and SPOT 5 imagery). We’ll then set up your contract agreement and arrange your access.
What internal infrastructure do we need?
To access VueNZ you’ll need an internal GIS application or viewer capable of reading WMS, ArcXML, ImageX or ECWP formats. Most standard GIS applications can read these applications.
We’ll let you know if you need anything else – the requirements will depend on your specific business needs and any other data you have or require to be integrated with the imagery.
Why should we use VueNZ?
Unlike most other data types, geospatial images are typically measured in hundreds of gigabytes, even terabytes. And the files are getting ever larger as technology improves and images become more detailed.
In addition, organisations are having to manage more and more image datasets owing to the wider range of sensors available and their wish to store data for the same area for different years (or even months) for comparison purposes.
Managing these images and ensuring they’re available to everyone who needs them is a challenge that’s impossible to meet without employing specialist image serving software. That’s why you need VueNZ.
How does VueNZ secure our data?
VueNZ uses sophisticated security systems to lock down your imagery assets. You’ll also be able to restrict access to:
- an image or group of images
- a specified region within an image
- a particular resolution.
VueNZ distributes imagery using SSL-based encryption, while ECWPS (streaming secure imagery) can serve your image data to users in 40-256-bit-based encryption.
What is KiwImage?
KiwImage is a cross-government initiative that provides DigitalGlobe Inc high-resolution satellite images of New Zealand’s land and enclosed waters.
The project is led by the Ministry of Defence with involvement from the New Zealand Fire Service, Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and Local Government New Zealand. It’s sponsored by LINZ.
Note that KiwImage is only available to government-sponsored organisations that hold KiwImage licences.
What does KiwImage offer us?
KiwImage offers a number of benefits to government-sponsored organisations that hold licences to use it.
Geo-spatially accurate and using images less than two years old, it aims to provide complete coverage of New Zealand by 30 June 2010. This means you’ll have access to images of:
- all New Zealand land and enclosed waters (such as harbours, sounds, fjords, lakes and lagoons)
- at least one kilometre of the offshore waters surrounding any land or rock depicted on any published chart in the New Zealand hydrographic series covering these areas.
You’ll also be able to see the context of the location you’re reviewing – which means you’ll get more information than you would through simply viewing maps.
